International Week of the Deaf Events in Iowa City

Sept 18-24 is the International Week of the Deaf! The University of Iowa ASL Program is hosting the below events that week to increase awareness! They are all free and open to the public! 

Tuesday, September 19th

Life Stories – A Student Panel Discussion       7 pm, Biology Building East 101

Join us for a panel discussion about the variety of experiences our panel members, all University of Iowa students, have had as Deaf and hard of hearing people. Issues of discussion will include educational experiences, language use, family relationships, and identity. Attendees will be encouraged to ask questions.

Thursday, September 21st

ASL Film - What are you … Deaf?                     7 pm, Van Allen LR2

CJ Jones stars in this recording of his one-man show, What are you … Deaf? a series of vignettes from the life of this Deaf, African-American comedian and performer. He explores his relationship with his father, a Golden Gloves champion boxer and a graduate of a segregated Deaf school in the south. Film in ASL with English captions and voice-over. 

Friday, September 22nd

Deaf Education – A Panel Discussion                   7 pm, Becker Communication Building Rm 101

Join us for a panel discussion about the variety of experiences and challenges d/Deaf children have in school in Iowa. Panelists will include educators of deaf/hard of hearing children, educational interpreters, and parents of deaf children. Topics of discussion will include language access, quality and competency of educational staff, effective use of interpreters, and family engagement. Attendees will be encouraged to ask questions.

Register by Monday, June 6th, space is limited:

·         The content and examples during this session are deaf/hard of hearing or deaf/blind specific.

·         Childcare will be provided by trained childcare providers with sign language skills (Saturday only). 
Language and literacy skill building activities will be provided by licensed Teachers of the Deaf or Hard of Hearing.

·         Hotel rooms will be provide (free of cost) for families travelling greater than 50 miles. You will need to provide a credit card at check-in for incidental charges (movies, food, etc.).

·         Interpreters will be provided for attendees upon request.
